How to Play Soccer – Tactics

You’ve got your soccer team, you’ve got your soccer formation: now it’s time to talk soccer tactics. Tactics in soccer is a term sometimes used interchangeably with formation on the soccer field, but for this article we’ll take it to mean aspects of play put into action by the players on the pitch who already have a football formation to adhere to.

Soccer coaches talk tactics a lot, and it’s clear to see why. A team may have trouble getting the ball into the oppositions’ goal area for any number of reasons, and as such a change of tactics may be required to do the trick. Tactics can also be changed during the game and worked on in training for an element of surprise. Below we’ll look at four common tactical set-ups and when they might be employed.

Route One – The Long Ball Game: Soccer fans tend to groan when they hear about long ball tactics, as it is considered a boring and unsophisticated style of play. Yet when it works, and results in a goal, these same supporters will be on their feet cheering! The long ball seeks to bypass much of the opposition by thumping the ball up from the defense right to the attackers. Obviously, for this to work you need a strong, usually tall, and certainly very commanding striker who can jump for the ball in the air, bring it to the ground, and then either pass it off to his partner forward or run at the defense. This is ideal against smaller defenders and if you have a tall, strong attacker, known as the ‘target man’, at your disposal – not to mention a defender who can really kick it the length of the field.

Wing play: Wing play is generally the opposite of the long ball game, but a target man can also be employed here. Rather than bypassing the midfield, the ball will travel much of the length of the field on the ground, being dribbled forward by a full-back or, more commonly, a wide midfielder or winger. This requires swift, usually short, skilful players with a low centre of gravity who can easily run with the ball and fox defenders. When they hit the edge of the opponent’s goal area they can ‘cross’ the ball into the box high or low for the attackers to score with, or cut inside themselves and take a shot on goal.

The offside trap: This defensive tactic is risky, but a well-trained, well-drilled team can make it invaluable. The idea is to take advantage of soccer’s «offside» rules by making all defenders – usually all four, in a 4-4-2 – time a run forward so that the opposing attacker is left in an offside position when the ball is played to him. If one defender gets his timing wrong the striker can go free one-on-one with the goalkeeper, so don’t try this one without a long time of working on soccer drills and defensive training. Once you get it working, though, it’s very effective, and really frustrates the opposition.

Best Football Teams In Bulgaria

Football is religion for this small country. Throughout its communist times, the Bulgarian nation managed to preserve its nationality and freedom exactly through supporting the country’s favourite football club – Levski Sofia named after the apostle of Bulgarian freedom from Ottoman rule, established in 1914. Known under many different names throughout the years, broken down and dissolved in an attempt to subdue the enthusiasm and empower the communist motto «If you’re not with us, you are against us» and stomp on the basic human rights to support a team they love, Levski Sofia football club has managed to perservere and come out on top in today’s society. It has won 26 Bulgarian Championship titles, only beaten by its rival CSKA Sofia. Famous football icons such as Gundi and Gonzo who played internationally have captained the team and have taken it to worldwide fame. Gerena stadium is the main stadium of Levski Stadium with capacity of 19,000.

The other mostly supported Bulgarian team is CSKA Sofia. Its history is a little different to Levski’s as they were the Army’s team in the past – supported by the government in power and managed by the very same. Considering they have won 31 title in the shorter history, founded in 1934, it is only fair to consider the fact that during communist times they were pushed to victories in order to maintain the control of the governing party by proving to the ordinary citizen that the leading party is the almighty powerful tool that is to lead them. If we put that aside, CSKA has provided one of the top quality footballers on a worldwide level, including Hristo Stoichkov and Dimitar Berbatov, one playing for Barcelona, reaching 4th place with Bulgarian national team and winning the Golden Ball award and the other playing for top clubs like Tottenham, Manchester United and Monaco and winning the Champions League, respectively. CSKA Sofia has a great academy for youngsters and is known to promote young footballers and develop them to become great professionals.

The most famous, risen to infamousy football club recently is Ludogoretz. It’s owner is Kiril Domuschiev, a wealthy businessman that funds the club and supplies it with a budget nearly 5 times as large as the second to it in terms of finance. Their main strategy is to acquire footballers from abroad, primarily African regions and Brazil and use them to dominate in the local championship. Results speak for themselves, Ludogoretz has been a champion for the past 4 years since it emerged in the Group A of the Bulgarian football league. They played in the Champions League groups last year narrowly losing to Liverpool and Real Madrid and beating Basel on home turf. The team resembles Manchester City and Real Madrid in terms of management and is the top club in Bulgaria at the moment.

The History of World Cup Football

The FIFA World Cup (often called the Football World Cup or simply the World Cup) is the most important competition in international football (soccer), and the world’s most representative team sport event. Organised by Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport’s governing body, the World Cup is contested by the men’s national football teams of FIFA member nations. The championship has been awarded every four years since the first tournament in 1930 (except in 1942 and 1946 due to World War II), however it is more of an ongoing event as the qualifying rounds of the competition take place over the three years preceding the final rounds. The final tournament phase (often called the «Finals») involves 32 national teams competing over a four-week period in a previously nominated host nation, with these games making it the most widely-viewed sporting event in the world.[1] In the 17 tournaments held, only seven nations have ever won the World Cup Finals. Brazil are the current holders, as well as the most successful World Cup team, having won the tournament five times, while Germany and Italy follow with three titles each. The next football World Cup Finals will be held in Germany.

The first international football match was played in 1872 between England and Scotland, although at this stage the sport was rarely played outside Great Britain. As football began to increase in popularity, it was held as a demonstration sport (with no medals awarded) at the 1900, 1904 and 1906 Summer Olympics before football became an official competition at the 1908 Summer Olympics. Organised by England’s Football Association, the event was for amateur players only and was regarded suspiciously as a show rather than a competition. The England national amateur football team won the event in both 1908 and 1912.

With the Olympic event continuing to be contested only between amateur teams, Sir Thomas Lipton organised the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy tournament in Turin in 1909. The competition is often described as The First World Cup,and featured the most prestigious professional club sides from Italy, Germany and Switzerland. The first tournament was won by West Auckland, an amateur side from north-east England that was invited after the Football Association refused to be associated with the competition. West Auckland returned in 1911 to successfully defend their title, and were given the trophy to keep forever, as per the rules of the competition.

In 1914, FIFA agreed to recognise the Olympic tournament as a «world football championship for amateurs», and took responsibility for organising the event. This led the way for the world’s first intercontinental football competition, at the 1924 Summer Olympics. Uruguay won the tournament, before winning the gold medal again in 1928, with another South American team, Argentina, taking silver. In 1928 FIFA made the decision to stage their own international tournament. With Uruguay now two-time official football world champions and due to celebrate their centenary of independence in 1930, FIFA named Uruguay as the host country.

The 1932 Summer Olympics, held in Los Angeles, did not plan to include football as part of the programme due to the low popularity of football in the United States. FIFA and the IOC also disagreed over the status of amateur players, and so football was dropped from the Games.FIFA president Jules Rimet thus set about organising the inaugural World Cup tournament to be held in Uruguay in 1930. The national associations of selected nations were invited to send a team, but the choice of Uruguay as a venue for the competition meant a long and costly trip across the Atlantic Ocean for European sides. Indeed, no European country pledged to send a team until two months before the start of the competition.Rimet eventually persuaded teams from Belgium, France, Romania, and Yugoslavia to make the trip. In total 13 nations took part — seven from South America, four from Europe and two from North America.

A spin-off tournament, the FIFA Women’s World Cup, was first held in 1991. It is similar to the men’s tournament in format, but so far has not generated the same level of interest.
